The Problems with Pandemics

John Matthew Barlow The World Health Organisation is today set to declare H1N1, the so-called swine flu, a pandemic, making it the first of its kind in four decades. This is on account of the disease's emergence in Victoria, Australia, and means that the virus has now spread, and entrenched itself, in North America, Europe, and Australia. Cases have also been reported in Asia. That being said, however, a pandemic does not necessarily mean anything concerning the virulence of the disease, but rather its geographic spread.
